getting stronger bye-bye-blackbird | I spent my morning packing up my things and unpacking more of Bronwyn's, making this room as comfortable and user friendly as possible. Because it was a Sunday there was nothing much happening on the medical front, just more questions. Bron's strength was still improving with the tube feeding. The sketches attracted attention right from the start in her room with nurses and housekeeping. It always started the same way: "Did you draw those?" "No, my mother did." "Well, they are very good. I see a lot of you in them, this is your story isn't it?" "Yes." And a bond would start to form. Flying home was difficult. There were still so many questions unanswered. We didn't know the path this was going to take. Max drove me to the airport, and went home to catch up on a few things. Bron pulled out her colouring book and began to colour the picture on the right by Fabrice Backes and I pulled out my iphone and sketch book and started in on the same image while the song "Blackbird" by the Beatles ran through both our heads. Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life You were only waiting for this moment to arise. Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these sunken eyes and learn to see All your life You were only waiting for this moment to be free. We have always had the wonderful connection with shared likes or emotions. I sat next to a medical student studying in Halifax. We had a long discussion about Lyme disease and the need for more education and medical strategy. I left her with an urging to pay attention to this rising epidemic. I don't know where she is right now, and don't even remember her name. I just found in fascinating that this is where I sit on a plane ride home. | by Fabrice Backes |
